PostNL presents IAM as-a-service case study at EIC 2015

PostNL, Benelux’s leading mail, parcel and e-commerce corporation, presented its ‘IAM as-a-service’ case study at the European Identity & Cloud Conference (EIC) in Munich. PostNL employs more than 60.000 employees in Benelux and also across its mail and parcel networks in Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom. With traditional mail volumes declining, cost cutting and flexibility (both in business and IT strategy) are high on the corporation’s agenda. As such, PostNL announced a 100% IT Cloud strategy and by the end of 2015 will have migrated all of its on-premise hosted applications to the Cloud.

iWelcome’s IAM as-a-service solution is at the heart of PostNL’s Cloud strategy. It enables the corporation to comply with security standards and certifications for Cloud security. PostNL presented the project at Kuppingercole's conference, highlighting its key features, which include:

  • 24/7 availability of all employee identities as well as millions of consumers
  • A secure login page which includes two factor user authentication
  • A portal (launch pad) for Cloud applications
  • Third party user provisioning and authentication
  • Single sign-on, log-off and self service

Key learnings As part of his presentation, Theo Punter, Manager Cloud IT/Integration and Connectivity, PostNL, shared his key-learnings from the IDaaS implementation. These included:

  • The majority of IAM solutions on the market can not keep pace with developments in the Cloud, mobile apps and federation
  • Qualities to look for in a supplier include an established presence in the market, flexibility and a willingness to work in close partnership
  • Stick to standards and enforce these in an agile way
  • Include definition of IAM as-a-service policies as part of the service delivery contract
  • Over 90% use SAML2.0 for authentication, but SCIM as a standard for provisioning is not fully developed yet
  • Don’t mix Cloud with on-premise unless you design on-premise applications using Cloud principles
  • Release and transition management becomes even more important

Theo Punter concluded his presentation with the affirming statement that PostNL’s IDaaS solution has brought significant cost reductions and therefore improved the corporation’s market position. Read more about PostNL case.
